Albatross

Written and produced by himself, Albatross is a bitter ode to a former lover. The name ‘Albatross’ is a reference to poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s Romantic epic ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’. In this story, a sailor kills a friendly albatross that has been granting his ship good fortune. After things turn for the worse, the rest of his crewmates force the sailor to hang the bird around his neck as a sign of his guilt. Cutting ‘the Albatross from my neck’ is therefore a metaphor for releasing a burden.
